Authorities at Rwenshama landing site on Lake Edward in Rukungiri district are worried about a possible disease outbreak after the lake bust its banks and flooded the area, displacing 556 people.
Rwenshama LC-II chairman John Karabareme says 55 households were displaced and those who stayed have no latrines, opting for the bushes around the Queen Elizabeth national park. The Rukungiri district health officer, Dr Elisa Rutahirwa, told The Observer that he was aware of the health problems and was watching the situation closely.
In the meantime, Karabareme revealed that local leaders had agreed to use the three acre land at Rwenshama health centre to build three makeshift latrines to assist the displaced families, with the police and UPDF assisting the local leaders.
