Nigeria: Police Clamp Down On Newspaper Vendors in Maiduguri

Maiduguri — The police in Borno State Wednesday rained some strategic locations housing newspaper vendors in Maiduguri and arrested five people believed to be newspaper vendors at the Bolori roundabout, opposite the official residence of the commissioner of police.

It was gathered that the chairman of the newspaper vendors association, Musa Ali, were among those arrested.

A police source said the vendors had been warned severally to vacate the place because criminals used the place for their nefarious activities.

But the chairman, Yerwa Newspaper Distributors/Vendors Association, Borno, Bunu Umara, described the arrest as unlawful, saying other vendors would on Saturday protest the arrest.

Borno Police Commissioner Abdullahi Yuguda confirmed the raid, saying that criminals used the place.

Our correspondents gathered that the vendors were yesterday released.
