Dear Sir
Re: Request to meet with leaders of farmworkers from Le Chasseur District to discuss threat of violence by farmers against farmworkers.
In the past two days farm workers have decided to participate in labour actions in a peaceful manner in the Le Chasseur district.
They have conducted their strike and labour action without violence and disciplined manner. Yet the manager of farm (Hennie) has driven around pointing guns at the workers and threatening to shoot them. This type of conduct is unacceptable and is a serious violation of the law. Moreover, it is extremely provocative and can lead to the situation getting out of control and even leading to loss of life.
We also want to discuss the conduct of the police towards farm workers, especially women. They are abusive and extremely crude.
We request a meeting to discuss this situation. We have also invited the Commission of Human Rights as well as the Commission for Gender Equality.
Farm workers from Le Chasseur will gather at the police station at 11h00 to meet you.
Yours Sincerely,
