Uganda's Soyenkwo Kibet caused a major upset by clinching the men's 12-kilometre race title at the cradle of Kenya's distance running at the Eldoret Polytechnic.

Over 1,000 athletes were in action in the sixth leg of the Kenya Commercial Bank/Athletics Kenya national cross country series with top contenders chasing the Sh1.2 million jackpot offered by the bank.

The Ugandan upset Kenya's 2010 world cross country champion Joseph Ebuya, bringing back the bitter memories of Uganda's victory in last year's Olympic men's marathon race where Stephen Kiprotich stunned Kenya's pre-race favourite trio of Wilson Kipsang, Abel Kirui and Emmanuel Mutai by winning the gold medal.

Uganda's Kibet, the new kid on the block, broke away in the 600-metre mark to open up a 15-metre gap and breasted the tape in 34 minutes, 44.5 seconds, while new-comer Julius Kogo came in second in 35:01.2 while the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championships winner, Wilson Kiprop, finished third in 35:21.3.
