The House of Representatives has described the front page story of the Thursday, January 10, 2013 edition of the New Democrat Newspaper under the caption: "US$500,000 for cleaning up" as not only false and misleading but an act of "yellow journalism and irresponsibility".
According to a release from the Press and Public Affairs Bureau, the House of Representatives is expending US$10,000 in preparedness for the second session of the 53rd legislature which is expected to resume on Monday, January 14, 2013. The Bureau of Press release quotes the Rules, Order and Administration Chairman, Representative Edwin Snowe as saying that at no time did the leadership of the House of Representatives approve US$500,000 just to clean up the building or for any other purpose.
New Democrat is challenged to display any letter or payment voucher for the amount it alleged is being spent for the clean-up of the building. The release noted that as journalists enter the New Year, they must exhibit high degree of professionalism in the discharge of their duties rather than invented story based on falsehood. It describes the Democrat purported source as a liar.
The Bureau used the occasion to call on Liberian journalists to counter check their stories before publication, because any misinformation published is unfair to the democratic culture of Liberia.
