In a joint declaration issued from Algiers on Thursday (January 10th), Algeria and Spain called for the "restoration of territorial integrity, sovereignty and constitutional order" in Mali.
The solution must have "political, humanitarian and security axes", the two countries underlined. The persistence of the instability in Mali "threatens the security of the whole (Sahel) region", the statement said.
Algeria and Spain also reiterated support for the UN Security Council resolutions "that draw the contours of a global solution to the Mali crisis".
During their meeting Thursday, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and visiting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy pledged to work together to maintain security and stability, APS reported.
The two countries also inked a number of co-operation accords in science, industry, culture, technology and other sectors.
In related news Thursday, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss reports that Ansar al-Din had seized the Malian town of Konna.
Malian troops retreated toward Sevare, near Mopti, according to witnesses.
French UN Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters after the meeting that urgent action was needed to protect the city of Mopti and its 100,000 inhabitants.
