South Africa: Cecilia Makiwane Hospital Urgently Requires More Doctors

press release

The IFP calls on the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape to speed up the process of employing qualified surgeons in Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane.

IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli, MP said "It is shocking to learn that intern doctors who have no experience are expected to perform procedures they have never done before due to a shortage of skilled doctors at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital. To use interns in a surgery department is to put patient's lives at far greater risk of unnecessary complications and even death. The Department of Health must see to it that this hospital is properly staffed as soon as possible because a patient has now lost his life due to this kind of situation".

"The IFP reiterates its call for the MEC for Health, Mr Sicelo Gqobana and the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to work closely together in solving all existing health problems in the Eastern Cape, and that any personnel who negligently fail to perform their duties must be removed from their positions immediately." said Msweli

The Eastern Cape Department of Health must either start to function correctly or be placed under national administration, as our people are the ones who ultimately suffer and bear the brunt of failed provincial administrations.
