Tanzania: MCT Probes Kwizera Radio Journo's Death

THE Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) has sent a probe team to Kigoma to investigate circumstances surrounding the death of Kwizera Radio reporter Issa Ngumba.

The investigation team is led by MCT's Ethics and Arbitration Manager, Mr Allan Lawa. Other members of the team includes Ms Joyce Bazira, a lecturer at School of Journalism and Mass Communication of the University of Dar es Salaam and Deo Nsokolo, the Chairperson of Kigoma Press Club (KgPC).

The team has been tasked to establish whether his death was in any way associated to his work as a journalist, and to look into the safety of the working environment of Kigoma journalists including those working in areas occupied by refugees.

The team is expected to present its report within two weeks from January 12, 2013. MCT expects the team to also make recommendations on how the working environment of journalists can be improved particularly their safety. Ngumba's body was found inside Kajuluheta Mountain forest, in Muhanga village, Kakonko district three days after his disappearance. A gun with five rounds of ammunition was found beside his body and two mobile phones.
