KAMUKUNJI MP Yusuf Hassan has been named 2012 Person of the Year by influential Somali website Hiiraan Online.
The news website said it had chosen Hassan "because of his selflessness and desire to change his constituency that was in tatters for years" and because "he fearlessly stood up for the rights of the Somali community who were wrongly stereotyped as terrorists, pirates and illegal aliens."
Hiiraan said he "managed to secure key infrastructure development projects from the government, and has at the same time earned the trust of Eastleigh's business community."
On December 7, Hassan was targeted by an explosive device as he left the mosque in Eastleigh. Hiiraan said "anti-peace elements" had tried to assassinate him because he was trying to unify the Kamukunji community.
Hassan is now in a Johannesburg hospital undergoing extensive reconstructive surgery on his lower legs.
"He is making excellent progress," his wife Susannah Price said yesterday.
