Egypt: Azhar Welcomes Egypt-Iran Support of Palestinian Cause

Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb welcomed Egypt's and Iran's unity in supporting the fair cause of the Palestinian people.

Following a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Tayyeb underlined the importance of respecting the rights of Sunni Muslims in Shiite-majority Iran.

Tayyeb also reiterated Al-Azhar's rejection of attempts by some Shiite activists to infiltrate Sunni communities.

Tayyeb urged the fatwa-issuing bodies in Iran's Qom and Shiraz cities to explicitly prohibit the defamation of Prophet Muhammad's wives, companions and followers.
