Kenya: Kibaki Package Debate Rages As KHRC Calls for Demonstrations

President Kibaki has stirred a fresh row by referring the controversial Retirement Benefits Bill 2012 to Attorney General for re-drafting.

Civil society groups yesterday complained that the President not only remained silent on his Sh25 million package but had also, technically, asked the AG to engage in unconstitutional acts.

They said the last time the president remained silent on a Bill, the Statute Miscellaneous Amendment Bill 2012, it later emerged that he had actually signed it.

The groups insist that the only constitutionally mandated body to review remuneration for public servants is the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Kenya Human Rights Commission announced that they have planned demonstrations through out the week to force the President to reconsider his move.
