Nigeria: Entertainers to Look Out for This Year

Awards, top charts and fan base, the stage is set for another successful year for this music arts, Chidimma and Davido are among the few of the young talents expected to glitter this year. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM brings you some of them in random selection

Chidimma: 'Kedi Ke' crooner and beautiful princess of MTN project fame has really proved herself worthy and a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. The very young and beautiful Chidimma has shown the world that beating her fellow contestants at the popular MTN talent hunt musical context, was well deserved for clinging Kora, not less than a year of coming into the musical scene.

Chidinma's style of music is one aspect that sells her. Her voice and delivery tells one that the rudiments she went through during the talent hunt helped her a lot.

The winner of MTN Project Fame West Africa 2011, Chidinma Ekile is a virtuous woman who has been through a lot in life.

The 22-year old musician, who was brought up in Ikorodu, Lagos, has a humble beginning.

When she was 21, she joined the group of hopeful contestants for the MTN Project Fame West Africa Audition in Lagos.

The beautiful lady thrilled the judges with her unique singing voice and was selected among the top 18 contestants that made it to the Project Fame Academy.

After over 2 months of rigorous voice training, Chidinma had enough performances to win the hearts of the judges and thousands of viewers to clinch the ultimate prize and become the first female winner of the competition.


The self acclaimed 'Omo baba olowo', has set a standard for himself. One of D'banj's signees, he is sure going to be one artiste to watch out for in 2013.

The remix of his song 'Dami Duro' with Konvict Music boss, Akon, tell industry watchers that the rest of the local music industry isn't doing too badly, as he won an award for the 2012 Best Male Newcomer.

David Adeleke also a music producer, was born in Atlanta GA, USA on November 21st to Mr. And Mrs. Adeleke, and attended The British International School, Lagos. Travelling between the USA, UK and Nigeria, Davido has experienced different cultures but still stays true to his roots and this is evident in his music and the people he considers his biggest influences in the music world, which include Don Jazzy, 2 Face Idibia, Sound Sultan and Wande Coal.

Though Davido started music professionally a year ago, he has been performing and making music since the age of 11. Now 19, he has set up a record label called HKN Music, jointly owned by Davido and Ade, his older brother. The saying "If you want something done, do it yourself" is what led the brothers start the label, as Davido believes that as a producer and recording artiste, he would be in the best position to create music that suits his style. When asked to choose an ideal producer to work with, he responded "...myself, because I know what I want exactly!" He is however quick to mention that he would definitely be excited to work with Sarz, Jaysleek and Don Jazzy.

Beverly Nanya:

In 2010 when Beverly carted home the award of 'Most Promising Talent' at the Best of Nollywood Awards, movie buffs began to see her as one who has come to stay. As if proving her admirers right, she further emerged as 'Fast Rising Actress' at the City People's Awards 2011, after which her career has remained on a steady rise.

With this feat, the UK returnee actress who embraced Nollywood in 2008 with her first amazing role in a hit movie entitled Home In Exile, is no doubt among the latest sensations in the industry. Other movies where she has displayed her acting prowess include, The Stripped, Weekend Getaway, Up Creek Without A Paddle, Alan Poza, Make Me a Heart' and numerous others.

The only child of her parents who lived most of her life in London re-located to Nigeria about 3 years ago, to pursue her passion for acting. Beverly who studied Film Making and Script Writing at Rodhampton University in London was once rumoured to be in a sizzling romance with Desmond Elliot. Months later, she was alleged to have switched over to Uti Nwachukwu, a romance close observers believe is waxing stronger.

JJC aka Skillz:

Abdul Rasheed Bello is a Nigerian rapper and record producer born on April 4, 1977 in Kano, Nigeria. He released a monster hit, tongue-in-cheek and wildly infectious, JJC's single and video "We Are Africans" which attracted over 500,000 views on YouTube alone, not counting the REMIXES (5) and counting, and also picked up by the influential American hip-hop site www.worldstarhiphop.com, as well as being play-listed on MTV Base Africa, and also being on heavy rotation on Nigezie, BEN TV and many other channels.

"[We Are Africans]" is an anthem - in fact it could be labelled as the national anthem for the United States of Africa, a concept which signifies the unification and reinvention of Africa and Africans from all parts of the Diaspora. Like James Brown's "Say It Loud" many years before, "We Are Africans" combines the sentiment of pride, unity and positivity, whilst being controversial to some.

The 'Eni Duro' crooner who is known for his versatile rap style, free spirited delivery and creative lyrical ability has featured lots of talents in the industry and has become a force to reckoned with featuring big names in the industry.

Born Olamide Adedeji on March 15, in Bariga Lagos, Olamide fell in love with Rap music as early as his primary school days. He also discovered his talent to rap and began to nurture it in the year 2000. Since then he has featured on songs like "I'm grateful" by Maiojoe, "Take me there" by Jahbless and he has dropped some nostalgic lines on the collaborative track between him, Zara, and Adol called "Naija Hail"

Olamide who is currently working on his first album which features artistes like Adol and Whizkid is under the musical care of Coded Tunes boss ID Cabasa. Being a versatile artiste, he not only raps, but also writes for different genres of music such as Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae and Pop.
