Nigeria: New Reality TV Show Set to Hit Abuja

Something new is about to happen to the entertainment landscape of Abuja which will be the first of its kind in the history of entertainment in the territory. It is a new entertainment buzz which will not leave Abuja the same. Sunny Idachaba writes on this train that is about to land in the FCT.

The entertainment industry in Nigeria especially Abuja will, beginning from the first quarter of 2013,experience a new burst as a new reality TV show with unique setting and production in the FCT is set to hit the territory. It is the first of its kind in the area judging from its concept, purpose and mission.

According to Miss June Christopher, the producer and host of the show, "This is the first time that such a programme is coming out of Abuja even though the city had long been ripe for this innovation". According to this Edo state born graduate of English from the University of Abuja, the whole idea about this new reality TV show called HAWT ABUJA is to, in many ways, launder the image of our dear federal capital while at the same time help upcoming artistes to rediscover their talents and as well assist them in their journey to stardom.

One remarkable attraction about this show, according to her, is that it would be co-presented from time to time with foremost entertainment gurus both within and in the Diaspora. One of them who was present during the unveiling of the project was the US-based Nigerian entertainer, JJC who is noted for the production of major musicals for many artistes like Don Jazzy, D-Banj, Weird MC and others.

It is to be aired on major news media like Africa Independent Television, AIT, Star Times medium and other media across the country. This graduate of the TV College, Jos was also the brain behind Shakatawa, another entertainment programme that was on Africa Independent Television for a number of years. Therefore, according to her, since HAWT ABUJA is her new baby, it would be packaged with the mind of building to last.

"Abuja city is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. We are however deceived by the illusion that the best places we can get in the world is in the American and European cities especially if shots of definite locations are taken from those places and shown to us here but I intend to do same for our dear capital showing major land mark buildings, streets and monuments which can compare with anyone abroad. This is why I want the setting of thisprogramme to originate from Abuja".

Already I have the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Information as well as the Nigerian Tourism Development Commission, NTDC to use the programme to show the good things about our country", she says.

A copy of the recorded show which the producer showed journalists had the endorsement of popular faces in the industry like Alih Baba, kateHenshaw and others who say that the idea will change the misconception about Nigeria as a terrorist state where socio-economic life cannot thrive.

Instead of upcoming artistes to run to Lagos for auditioning, recording and producing their albums, Miss June says, "In collaboration with my foreign partners, the other dimension of this programme is to help in raising upcoming artistes to stardom because many talents abound in Abuja that are not yet discovered because many of such cannot afford the cost of travelling to Lagos or even flying outside the country for their records and shows promotion but with this initiative that I am coming up with, I know the entertainment industry in Nigeria especially Abuja will not be the same again".

Part of the concept of HAWT ABUJA, according to Miss June is that it will identify entertainment journalists whose works had for a long time been unacknowledged in the territory unlike what the Lagos-based journalists enjoy. To this end, it intends to collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the entertainment industry with the view to ascertaining those pressmen in the soft sell medium and entertainment outfits whose efforts have not been acknowledged for any awards in the past.

Asked to explain the idea behind the word, 'HAWT' instead of 'HOT', she said it is a creatively-coined word to make the show unique from others because in the industry, there is allowance for artistes to develop their own kind of brand in line with the concept. In her own words, "It is coined to be something outstanding, evolving and facilitating with the intention of making unique our own brand".
