The Communication Workers union (CWU) and Creative Workers Union of South Africa (CWUSA) have observed the attack directed at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) management particularly to the Acting Group Chief Operations Officer (GCOO), Mr Hlaudi Motsoaneng as an individual. We view this as onslaught by people who wanted to capture the SABC for their rightwing selfish and narrow interests.
We, CWU and CWUSA stand firm in our support for the Acting GCOO. We also wish for or recommend to the SABC board to appoint Mr Motsoaneng as a full-time GCOO and subsequently the Minister of Communications to confirm his appointment. Our support for the Acting GCOO is informed by his commitment to transformation and bringing stability at the SABC. Mr Motsoaneng’s track record of rising from a low position of freelancer in the 90’s to an Acting COO currently speaks volumes.
We also appreciate the support of Clerics or Bishops who gathered at the SABC on the 13th December 2012 to pray for the SABC management. The leader of the clerics and the representative of the churches, Bishop Pule Mokgethi said: “If you have leadership like that of the Group Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Lulama Mokhobo and the Acting Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Hlaudi Motsoeneng who take a strong position to refuse the SABC to be abused and refuse to allow bias reporting even though pressurized by everybody, such leadership deserves to be prayed for. People need to understand that the SABC stands in a pole position to teach the nation the values of honour and respect.”
The CWU and CWUSA are ready to defend the good work of the Acting GCOO.
South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro)
The CWU has reached a settlement agreement with South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) to end the two months long strike, which started on the 29th of October 2012 and was supported by CWUSA all the way. The industrial action was initially about the 13th cheque that the company has unilaterally phased out. However the parties agreed to enter into engagements that will look holistically into salary restructuring and performance measurement. The agreements further outline how the company will cushion the financial impact endured during the strike by workers.
CWU and CWUSA welcome the clause that binds two parties to work towards building a better working relationship that will benefit workers going forward. The union is excited that on the 10th of January 2013 (today) the union and the company will sign an improved collective agreement which grants the union bargaining rights.
Public Protector of South Africa
Communication Workers Union is disappointed by the manner in which the Public Protector of South Africa is handling the matter of allegations of corruption in the South African Post Office which was referred to them in April 2011 for investigation.
We are filled with an overwhelming sense of outrage at the fact that, though the matter was referred in April 2011 and a series of meetings were held by the Public Protector and CWU, we have not received any report up to this day. This happens despite the fact that the Public Protector promised in the last meeting held in August 2012 that a preliminary report would be availed to CWU in September 2012.
This attitude towards CWU by the Public Protector smacks of pomposity and sabotage in our view and does a disservice to CWU and the people of South Africa since the South African Post Office is a state owned company created to serve the South African populace.
CWU therefore demands that the Public Protector avail the report before the end of January 2013.
