Kenya: Makueni Farmers College Ready in July

Farmers in Makueni are set for greater training opportunities after government pledged to complete construction of the Makueni Agricultural Training Centre.

Ministry of Agriculture PS Dr. Romano Kiome said government has so far allocated Sh16 million for the project's completion by July. In a statement read on his behalf by Agricultural Training Centres director Phillip Makheti during the National Agricultural Field Day in Kaumoni, Dr. Kiome said Sh4 million was disbursed last year while the remaining Sh12 million will be released this year.

He urged farmers to make proper use of the facility which is part of government's initiative to improve the livelihoods of the local people. He said government has bought machinery for the county to construct dams, wells and earth dams to help it undertake agricultural irrigation.

The PS said this centre will be replicated in all other counties in line with vision 2030. "Government recognises that agriculture is the pillar of our economy and will therefore construct farmers training centres in all 47 counties," he said.
