Rundu — A 27-year-old man who was arrested on Saturday for alleged dealing in cannabis worth over N$50 000 made his first appearance in the Rundu Magistrate's Court yesterday morning.
The suspect, Elton Van Wyk, who is employed as a waiter in Windhoek, was arrested at the Mururani police checkpoint around midnight when police discovered 50 white plastic bags containing 11,235kg of pure cannabis in a black bag.
Police discovered the drug consignment in a minibus in which Van Wyk was travelling during a routine search at the Mururani police checkpoint.
Van Wyk applied for legal aid when he appeared before magistrate Nelao Brown.
Brown concurred with Public Prosecutor Billy Lutaka that the accused should be denied bail because he is a flight risk and there are two more suspects involved. She postponed the case to February 01, 2013 to allow for further police investigation.
