Kenya: President Ascents to Hefty Retirement Pay

President Kibaki yesterday signed 30 bills into law among them the Presidential Retirement Benefits Amendment Bill. The bill will see Kibaki get a hefty retirement send off package of Sh25 million.

Additionally, the president will enjoy a monthly pension of Sh1 million for the rest of his life.

The signing of the amendment into law by the president comes barely a week after he rejected a similar sendoff package for parliamentarians in which they would each get Sh9.3 million, coming to a tune of Sh9 billion at the cost of the taxpayer.

Leaders drawn from several society groups yesterday staged a demonstration to oppose the hefty send off and asked the president to reject it along with the MP's perks.

Another demonstration tagged as "state funeral" by the lobby group Picha Mtaani will be held tomorrow to pile pressure on the executive and legislature over the sendoff packages.
