Egypt: No Backtracking On Democracy March

Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar Ahmed El Tayyib said that the January 25th Revolution was successful and serves as a matchless model of other evolutions in the history of the region and the whole world.

He said Egypt will never backtrack on the march of Freedom and democracy.

This statement was given by the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar during his meeting on Monday 14/1/2013 with President of the European Union Herman Van Rompuy and his accompanying delegation.

The meeting dealt with a number of internal and external issues topped by economy, democratic transformation and political discourse which is currently witnessed by the Egyptian street.

On his part, Rompuy said the EU highly appreciates al-Azhar role in national dialogue and its permanent sponsorship of the principle of citizenship.

Rompuy hailed the Egyptian constitution, which gives unprecedented freedoms in the history of the Egyptian people. Concluding, he stressed the importance of societal dialogue in rallying ranks of the Egyptian people.
