Zambia: Eastern Teachers Owed KR46 Million

THE Ministry of Education in Eastern Province owes teachers and officers about KR46 million.

Provincial Education Officer (PEO) Thomas Mwanza said at the weekend that the debt was in salary-related arrears including leave and travel terminal benefits and settling-in allowances.

Mr Mwanza said the outstanding bill was for both retirees and those still in service.

"The Ministry of Education owes teachers and officers KR46 million in salary-related arrears," he said.

But Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba advised the PEO to write to his office so that he could quickly resolve the matter.

Mr Mwamba said it was shocking that there were some people who were owed huge sums of money.
