South Africa: IFP Extremely Concerned Over Demolition of Homes in KZN Midlands

press release

The IFP is extremely concerned over the proposed demolition of homes in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in the communities of Ambleton farms, Slangspruit and Thornville.

IFP Spokesperson on Human Settlements, Mr Petros Sithole, MP said, "What concerns us most about the demolition is that no proper notice has been given to the people whose homes are about to be demolished. Another grave concern is that Government has not provided these soon-to-be homeless people with any alternative options for residences. They will be de facto destitute."

Sithole added, "This is not what a responsible government for-the-people does! Furthermore these demolitions are being carried out by municipalities who do not even have the necessary authority to demolish people's homes. Only provinces have such authority."

As the IFP we say that Government should think very carefully before proceeding with such drastic measures. They have many dire implications for the residents who are uprooted. Children are affected. Communities are splintered. We therefore caution and advise government to consider all possible alternatives before proceeding with this demolition.
