Somalia: Somali President Visits the United States

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Foreign Minister Fowsiyo Yusuf Haji Aadan left for the United States on Sunday (January 13th) for meetings with high-level officials to strengthen ties between the two countries, the Somali National News Agency reported.

Mohamud is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, according to Somalia's Radio Sawa. Mohamud plans to discuss security, development and humanitarian issues in Somalia, according to a statement from his office.

The Somali president will also meet with members of the Somali community. This is Mohamud's first visit to the United States since he was elected president in September.
