Hundreds of FCT workers residing in the satellite towns and neigbhouring states resorted to long trek on Wednesday as commercial mini-bus drivers withdrew their services in protest against the new FCT transport policy.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) had restricted the buses to some parts of the city and introduced the use of high capacity buses to ply the city centre.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that mini-bus drivers plying the Mararaba-Abuja route set up barricades on the road, and carried placards to protest their restriction to Nyanya bus stop.
The action caused heavy traffic build up, which prompt the police in the area to deploy men and fired tear gas to disperse them and clear the roads for traffic.
A commuter, Mr Chinedu Obi, urged the FCT administration to make more buses available to ease movement of commuters from Masaka-Mararaba axis to the city centre.
Mr James Abe, another stranded commuter, lamented that the policy restricting mini-buses or Araba to certain areas of the territory was affecting the masses negatively.
"They do come out with policies that worsen the plight of the masses every January. Last January, it was the removal of subsidy on petrol and this January, it is the restriction of mini-buses to punish us," he said.
