Zambia: State Keen to Revamp Mwinilunga Pineapple Plant

The government is determined to revamp the pineapple factory in Mwinilunga through investors.

THE Government is courting two foreign investors who are interested in revamping the defunct Mwinilunga Pineapple Factory in North-Western Province.

Provincial Minister Stephen Masumba said the prospective investors would only be revealed once all documentation was finalised.

Mr Masumba said Government was determined to revamp the factory which would provide a ready market for the hundreds of mainly pineapple farmers in the province.

He said Government wanted investors to transform the factory so that it could maximise on value addition for the export market.

Mr Masumba said farmers in Mwinilunga District had the potential to feed the factory with adequate pineapples once it started operations and that, it would also play a fundamental role in creating market access.

Agricultural processing was vital in helping Zambia earn the much-needed revenue through the export of finished products.

The minister said increased agro-processing would facilitate technological transfer among farmers which was a crucial tool for the development of the country.

He said Government was creating employment to the youth and the general populace.
