Somalia: Al-Shabaab Announces Execution of French Hostage

Al-Shabaab announced Thursday (January 17th) that it had executed French intelligence agent Denis Allex.

"16:30 GMT, Wednesday, 16 January, 2013. Denis Allex is executed," al-Shabaab said on its Twitter feed. Al-Shabaab said Wednesday that its members "reached a unanimous decision to execute" Allex in order to avenge "the dozens of Muslim civilians senselessly killed by the French forces during the operation".

France, however, said Allex was likely killed during the failed rescue attempt on Saturday, adding that al-Shabaab has been "manipulating the media" in claiming that Allex was still alive.

A senior al-Shabaab member, however, says the group has audio and video recordings of the execution that it might release later, AFP reported.
