Wife of the Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun in collaboration with the Nigerian Bottling Company, has empowered 50 women with Coca-Cola Kiosks to assist them earn a living and boost their standard of living.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Uplifting the People/NBC
Kiosk held at the South-west Resource Centre, Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta, Amosun expressed her desire to further promote poverty alleviation initiatives in order to carry out their primary responsibilities towards their families and the society without resorting to any debasing acts.
She said the empowerment programme was part of her initiatives to complement the state government's effort on employment generation and capacity building through series of retail training to support the five-point agenda of the state government in uplifting people with special needs.
According to her: "When women are empowered and supported, the society stands better chances to benefit. This directly leads to stronger economic base for families and give them opportunities to remain healthier."
Amosun pointed out that she desired to do more through NBC's corporate social responsibility for women empowerment to enrich lives and also partner with other willing corporate organizations, noting that the empowerment programme would allow the beneficiaries to hold a job and have dignity of work ethics.
Beneficiaries were given empowerment tool kits, which include kiosks, electric chillers, ice chests, empty bottles, coolers and crates and they were counseled not to abuse, deface or sell the items given to them.
However, The 'Uplift Development Foundation' tallies with Coca-Cola System's global '5by20' programme meant to empower five million disadvantaged women entrepreneurs, empowering them through the Coca-Cola value chain by 2020.
She commended the Nigerian Bottling Company for vision 5BY20 programme, which was aimed at empowering five million women entrepreneurs across the Coca-Cola value chain by 2020. Also providing access to business skills, financial services, assets and support networks of peers and mentors, 5BY20 is helping women succeed as entrepreneurs, while also creating thriving, sustainable communities.
The Managing Director, Nigerian Bottling Company, represented by Mrs. Yanju Olomola noted that the wellbeing of its communities and stakeholders was paramount in its agenda and would partner with well-meaning Nigerians for the economic development of communities through various empowerment initiatives.
She also noted, that "NBC is in partnership with Ogun State for the 'Uplift the Needy Initiative' because it has long recognised that the wellbeing of its communities and stakeholders is integral to the company's wellbeing. NBC strives to be a partner for the social and economic development of its communities through various empowerment programmes that are jointly developed and implemented by the communities."
She advised the beneficiaries to ensure good use of the opportunity given to them to improve the quality of livelihood, expressing optimism that the beneficiaries would grow to become huge dealers of Coca-Cola and employers of labour in the not too distant future.
She also symbolically handed over the keys of the kiosks with products and equipment to Mrs. Amosun for distributions to the beneficiaries.
