Kenya: IEBC Urged to Reject Direct Ticket Aspirants

The National Gender and Equality Commission wants the IEBC to reject aspirants illegally cleared by political parties.

The commission said any aspirant who has not undergone the required nomination process as stipulated by the constitution should not be cleared.

This follows concerns thatPNU and ODM officials plan to give direct nominations to certain aspirants.

"Giving direct nominations to individuals who are not even preferred by the public is undemocratic and discriminatory. It denies them a chance to elect their desired leaders," said Winfred Lichuma, the chair of the commission.

She asked the IEBC to reject aspirants who do not adhere to the rule of law and come up with a mechanism of resolving disputes in a short time before the general election.

"Kenyans should watch their political parties keenly and reveal any attempts of unlawful nominations," Lichuma said.

She said the commission will issue a comprehensive report once all information and data is concluded after the nominations.

Lichuma was speaking to journalists in Lamu.
