Kenya: Two Ex-MRC Officials to Vie for Junda, Likoni Wards

TWO former Mombasa Republican Council officials were yesterday cleared to run for ward representative in Junda and Likoni.

Rashid Shakombo Kivyasto will vie on a Republican Congress ticket while Amani Chifwete, former Vikwatani branch vice chairman, represent TNA.

Chifwete's only competitor, Benard Osinde, dropped out of the race.

Yesterday, outgoing Mvita MP Najib Balala, the leader of the party, issued certificates to all his Coast aspirants at Farasi House in Tudor.

Kivyatso, a former chairman of MRC, Likoni branch, said he was happy with the nomination and will ensure he wins.

He will face ODM aspirant popularly known as Kogello and the UDF's Omar Ochieng.

Chifwete is the man coined the MRC slogan 'Pwani si Kenya' slogan.

Chiviatso was suspended from MRC after leading a group of 14 officials from different branches to meet Prime Minister Raila Odinga early this year.

In Kilfi, ODM election officials were yesterday rescued by the police from angry supporters who accused them of meddling with the nomination results at the tallying centre.

Returning officer David Mulei and county coordinator Abdalla Tsuma were escorted from the town hall under tight security after polling clerks and presiding officers from Kilifi south constituency demanded a recount.

The officers have gone to hiding.

The presiding officers and the aspirants accused the officers of announcing the wrong results for the Kilifi south parliamentary seat, Mwarakaya and Chasimba civic wards.

A document with the results from the polling stations showed that Nicholas Mrima Wanyepe had won by 3,129 votes while outgoing former Bahari MP who conceded defeat Benedict Gunda got 2939 votes and Mustafa Idd 2,301 votes.

However, results at the tallying centre indicated that Mustapha Idd won by 4,000 votes, Benedict Gunda 3,000 and Nicholas Mrima Wanyepe 2,000.

While the results were being announced at 5pm, the aspirants, presiding officers and agents were asked to move out of the hall but later forced their way in to protest at the results.

"This is not possible. It seems they rounded off the figures, which is unacceptable," said one of Mwayempe's agent.

Amason Kingi was announced ODM's governor flagbearer, Stewart Madzayo senator and Esther Kache for women representative.
