Mali: What the ICRC Did in 2012

press release


  • carried out 41 prison visits involving 3,500 prisoners, monitoring the cases of 242 of them individually;
  • facilitated the transfer of 15 detainees following their release.

Health care

  • built a shelter and a sick bay at Kati Prison ;
  • supported Gao Hospital (which treated over 1,300 people in 2012) by making a seven-person medical/surgical team team available and by providing medicines and other medical supplies;
  • made it possible for 18 people to obtain specialized treatment for their injuries in Niamey, Niger;
  • supported six health centres located between Ansongo and Timbuktu, which between them carried out 5,300 consultations, 1,350 vaccinations and 900 antenatal sessions.

Restoring family links

  • restored contact between separated family members by passing on 387 Red Cross messages and 282 telephone calls, by locating 37 people in response to requests from their families and by communicating the details of 20 detainees to their embassies.

Water and sanitation

  • maintained the water supply for the 115,000 residents of Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu, by supplying diesel to run water-pumping stations;
  • repaired over 25 water points and distribution systems in the north of the country.


  • distributed food and other essential supplies to over 547,000 people in the regions of Gao, Timbuktu, Kidal and Mopti;
  • distributed basic necessities to over 81,000 displaced persons in the north;
  • supplied seed to over 7,000 farmers and animal feed to over 56,000 livestock breeders;
  • supported the national vaccination campaign involving over 1.12 million animals, plus the treatment of almost 580,000 animals in the north.

Promoting international humanitarian law

  • briefed over 600 members of the armed forces and armed groups on international humanitarian law.
