Sudan: Thyroid Awareness Campaign to Be Launched in North Darfur

North Darfur — The North Darfur director of nutrition at the Ministry of Health, Fatima Sharif Ibrahim, has revealed that the number of thyroid inflammation cases caused by iodine deficiency amount to 11,240 cases. The number is based on a survey conducted in 2008.

The director stated that a comprehensive campaign will be launched to combat the disease across the state. Meanwhile, a UNICEF representative in the state has pledged the organization's readiness to provide medication for prevention of thyroid inflammation and explained that the organization's plan for the current year includes a comprehensive study to identify the cases of thyroid diseases in the state.

Besides, he continued, running educational awareness programs in schools about the importance of using iodized salt.
