Kenya: Fire At Kenyan Medical Supply Warehouse Destroys Drugs

A fire broke out at the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) warehouse in Nairobi's Embakasi area Saturday night (January 19th), destroying millions of shillings worth of drugs, Kenya's The Standard reported.

"The losses are massive but we cannot quantify for now," said KEMSA chief executive officer John Munyu. "This is one of the main warehouses that we run and we are yet to know the cause of the fire."

KEMSA operates seven warehouses that together house 4 billion shillings ($46.1 million) in drugs. KEMSA supplies drugs and other medical supplies to public hospitals and health facilities.

Police have not yet ascertained the cause of the fire. A team of experts is at the warehouse investigating, said Embakasi police boss Akello Odhiambo.
