The Media Council of Kenya has condemned the harassment of journalists by security forces and supporters of political parties during last week's party nomination exercise.

The media council has urged members of the public to exercise restraint while handling journalists during public events including those that are election - related.

"...We also inform the public that harassment of journalists is a clear breach of freedom of the media and by extension, of expression and violation of the rights of journalists as provided for by the Kenya Constitution 2010." The MCK has said.

The media monitoring body has also announced the setting up of a media freedom monitoring portal where incidents of violence against journalists can be reported through the address http://freedom.mediacouncil.or.ke/main

The announcement comes after two Nation Media Group Journalists were assaulted by General Service Unit officers and their cameras equipment confiscated as they covered last night's clashes in Kibera.

In a similar incident last Thursday, journalists from Citizen TV were barred from covering nominations at Moi Avenue Primary School in Nairobi by GSU officers.
