Ghana: MRI, CT SCAN Facilities for KATH

A brand new Computerised Tomography scan (CT SCAN) machine and a Magnetic Resonant Imaging (MRI) facility have been commissioned at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Dr. Mrs. Augustina Badu-Prempeh, head of the Radiology Department and Diagnostic Directorate, said the MRI, which has 128 slides and 15 testers, is used for imaging of spine abnormalities and bone tumor, as well as neurological diseases and abdominal pain.

According to Dr. Badu-Prempeh, the MRI has a strong magnetic field with metallic implant which helps to pull any metal out of the patient.

The MRI is used when people are unconscious and inter-hemorrhage in the brain (bleeding in the brain), while the CT scan is for radiation imaging.
