Nigeria: Mini Buses - NURTW Makes Case for Adequate Luxury Buses

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to provide adequate luxury buses and cabs as government sets to ban mini buses in the FCT. President of the union, Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, made the call yesterday in a press briefing sequel to a temporary lifting of a ban on mini buses in the FCT by the authorities.

Yasin said although the ban was in line with the transportation master plan of the FCT, he suggested that "as a palliative measure, adequate luxury buses and cabs be provided before reactivating the ban...so as to alleviate the suffering the people will face if provisions are not made."

While calling for adequate media campaign on the matter, he urged the administration to consider the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Public Transport System that could provide faster, more efficient service than ordinary buses.
