Uganda: Govt Declares January 30 Public Holiday

The Minister of Information, Mary Karooro Okurut has announced that Jan.30 will be a public holiday to allow Ugandans celebrate the 27th anniversary of the NRA/NRM liberation day which was uncharacteristically postponed from its official date of Jan.26.

Speaking to journalists today (Jan.22) in Kampala, Karooro-Okurut said the change in the date of celebration was to accommodate the request from foreign dignitaries who notified the government that Saturday, Jan.26 was not convenient for them to attend.

She said several high-profile dignitaries including those from Egypt and the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed attendance.

The national celebration will officially take place at Nyakasanga in Nyamwamba Division, in Kasese Municipality in the Rwenzori region.

Karooro-Okurut noted that Ugandans who cannot make it to Kasese will attend celebrations at the designated venues in their respective districts on the same day.

The liberation day has been celebrated for the last 27 years to commemorate the day the current government officially took over power after a protracted guerilla war.
