Tarime — AT last the African Barrick Gold (ABG) North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime District in Mara Region has completed the construction of a water treatment plant to fulfil the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) requirement.
The Mine's General Manager, Mr Gary Chapman, told the 'Daily News' that the firm expects after complying NEMC would inspect the mine and lift the ban on discharging effluents.
"Due to the enforcement of an environmental Protection order (EPO), North Mara gold mine was prevented from discharging any contact water from the site. The ban resulted into accumulation of almost 5,000,000 cubic metres of water on the tailing storage Facility (TSF)," said Mr Chapman.
The general Manager said now that ABG has fulfilled all the requirements by NEMC that ban should be lifted at least by next month.
