Tanzania: Professional Cricketers Arrive to Spice Up Local League

TWELVE professional cricket players from South Africa, Kenya, India and UK are set to arrive in Dar es Salaam today and will straight away join four local teams for this year's Advanced Players League (APL).

The four franchise teams to participate in the league kicking off at the Leaders Club ground, Kinondoni in Dar es Salaam tomorrow are Castle lager Rockets (Tanzania Breweries Ltd), Dikdiks (Dar International Cricketers), Gyproc Strikers (Gyproc - Saint Gobain) and Maxx Changers (Maxx Bureau De Change).

"The professionals players are expected to arrive in Dar tomorrow (today) and train on Thursday morning with the local cricketers before the tournament first game in the afternoon," said the event coordinator Kazim Nasser.

South African players to join the local sides are Wayne Kylander, Brian Tyrone Isitt and, Willem Mostert, while Kenyan players are Maurice Ouma, Alex Obanda and Nehemiah Odhiambo. Those coming from India are Shrideep Mangela, Jaideep Pardesi and, Raunaq Sharma, while the UK players are Richard Wilkinson, Timothy organ and Christopher Watling.

The tournament is organised by the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA), with a view to improving the performance of local players by providing regular 50 overs and Twenty/20 competitive opportunities to players who are keen to play competitive games.

Nasser said the games will be played on the newly refurbished natural grass wicket at the Leaders club and all the games can be viewed Live through internet streaming on www.tanzaniacricket. com. The Live streaming, he said, is powered by UhuruOne.

All the four franchise teams received their kits yesterday ahead of the four-day event. The franchise owner of Castle Lager Rockets, Tanzania Breweries Ltd presented the tournament kits for its team to the captain Benson Mwita, Gyproc Saint Gobain presented their team tournament kits to their captain Vishal Patel.

Tomorrow's curtain raiser game of the event will pit Gyproc Strikers and Maxx Changers, while two matches will be played on Friday. The morning match will pit Castle lager rockets and Dikdiks at the same venue, while Dikdiks will confront Gyproc Strikers in the afternoon.

On Saturday morning Maxx Changers will play against Castle Lager Rockets while in the afternoon Castle Lager Rockets will lock horns with Gyproc Strikers. The final will be played on Sunday afternoon and it will be preceded by the morning match between Dikdiks and Maxx Changers.

Nasser said that on Tuesday, there will be two T20 games between the APL professionals and TCA combine team. The APL 2013 will be the fifth edition of the event. The inaugural event took place in 2009.
