Nigeria: Woman Gets Five-Year Jail Term for Killing Child

Osogbo — A 30 year-old-woman, Yidiat Bakare has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for intentionally throwing her 3-months-old child into a river in Ifon-Osun, Orolu Local Government Area of Osun state.

The accused person, according to police prosecutor was said to have committed the offence on 10th January, 2013 after a misunderstanding with husband, Amodu Bakare.

It was gathered that the accused person threw her child into the river as a result of failure of her husband to provide money for her to cater for the child.

Police prosecutor, Mr Oladoye Joshua told the court that the action of the accused person resulted into the death of her baby contrary to and punishable under section 325 of the criminal code, cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun state 2003.

The accused person pleaded guilty and her counsel, Mr. Jimoh Daramola appealed to the court to consider his client since it was frustration that led her into such action.

In his judgment, the presiding Judge, Magistrate, Olusola Aluko sentenced the accused person to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.
