The attempt by Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to enforce a sudden ban on mini buses from the city centre came to an abrupt and chaotic end when member of the self-employed commercial drivers' association took to the streets in protest. The protest had turned violent, resulting in the destruction of some buses procured under the federal government's Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P). In reaction the FCT authorities announced a three-week moratorium on the policy to give room for consultation with stakeholders.
One of the most accurate criticisms of Abuja as the capital of Nigeria and seat of government it currently gives little consideration for the needs of low income earners. One example is that unlike other cities with similar status around the world, Abuja has no public conveniences. There is also no provision for low-cost housing projects, and efficient mass transit transport system.
