Tanzania: DGC Captain Tumbles in Snooker

THE Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) Competition Secretary, Nikhil Sangani put up an outstanding performance to win his first match of the Cargo Stars Dar Open Snooker tournament at the club on Tuesday evening.

Sangani, who had a first-round bye, booked his place into the third round of the tournament with an impressive 2-1 victory over his Captain Firoz Yusufali in a seesaw second round match. Yusufali started strongly to lead by 16-3, 30-13 and 35-25 points, but he faded as time went by only to allow Sangani to take control of the game in which he took a 35-36 lead.

The game took a sharp twist toward the end of the first frame, when Sangani committed a foul shot which cost him dearly. After losing the first frame, the victor fought back to take the second in the best of three second round match that was played for about two hours.

He won it by 31- 59 points. He maintained his focus to record a win in the third frame and went through to set a date in the third round match against either Zoeb Hakimjee or Suril Shah of DGC.

Sangani told the Daily News shortly after the match that: It was disappointing to concede the first frame like that, I quickly reorganized my self and managed to come back strongly in the two remaining frames to win the match. My opponent is a good player with much experience.

He is not playing frequently, but his experience ensured it was hard to win against him...it's always feel nice to win against your captain,Ó he said. Ally Gulamali of DGC also progressed to the third round by virtue of walk-over after his opponent Amir Hassani of Annadil Burhani failed to turn up as scheduled.

Gulamali will now test his skills against tough contender and 2009 champion Arjun Lavingia next Tuesday. In other scheduled second round match today, the 2010 finalist Akil Akberali will face Hasmukh Lalji; Taher Jivajee will play against Siten Borkhataria and Ashok Lavingia is pitted against Mukesh Kanabar.

The second round matches are expected to wind up next Monday where Khuzema Murtaza will meet Mustafa Adamji, Aliakbar Hakimjee against Arun Pattan while Akil Yusufali will be in the course against Omar B fighting for the place in the third round. The Cargo Stars Ltd sponsored tournament that brings together about 66 players from different Dar es Salaam based clubs will reach its climax on February 2, this year at the club.
