Ghana: Police Re-Arrest Ex-Convict

Kumasi — THE ASHANTI Regional Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robber in the person of Kwasi Ayaga, alias Adembe together with his accomplices who have been terrorizing taxi drivers in the Kumasi Metropolis.

At a press briefing, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. Augustine Gyennin, explained that the Suntreso Police led by the Crime Officer DSP/Mr. Mathew Nkwantabisa, re-arrested Ayaga upon a tip-off in his hide- out at Abuakwa on January 9, 2013 at 11.00 pm leading to the arrest of his accomplices.

According to him, Kwasi Ayaga, in his caution statement to police confessed having been involved in a series of robberies within the Metropolis. He indicated that on November 7, 2012, in the company of suspects Francis Asindo, alias Kwame Frafra, 29, Lovis Owusu, alias Ember, 20, and Rocky, now at large, hired the services of a taxi driver, and upon reaching the IPT junction tied the taxi driver at knife point, before dumping him in a nearby bush and bolted with the taxi cab, which ran into a ditch and was abandoned.

The police Boss said the suspect again indicated that on November21, 2012, at 3.00 am, he together with Francis Asindo, alias Kwame Frafra hired the services of deceased driver Kofi Adu and on reaching Suntreso Catholic junction they attempted to snatch the vehicle but the driver resisted and they killed him.

Kwasi Ayaga together with Kofi Boah, alias White, 26, Paul Faama, alias Ambulley and Rocky, now at large on January 7, 2013, who had been sponsored by a suspect, Prince Kwasi Prempeh, alias Nana, hired the services of a taxi driver by name Victor Adade, from the Suame Police Station to Asuoyeboa. On reaching the SSNIT Flat area, he robbed him at a knife point of his vehicle, tied him up, blind folded him with a tape and dumped him in an abandoned vehicle at Atwima Koforidua,. The vehicle, he said, was later retrieved when it was being sent to a sprayer.

He indicated that the previous cases against Kwasi Ayaga took place on July 2, 2012 at about 1.40 am when Kwasi Ayaga and two other accomplices now at large on board an Opel Astra taxi cab with registration No. GT 2930 Z armed with offensive weapons broke into a warehouse at Tanoso near UEW-Kumasi campus and stole lorry tyres valued at GH¢1,800.00 -but luck eluded them when they were apprehended by a patrol team and brought to the Regional CID.

It was at the CID that Ayaga was identified as a convict, who was sentenced in the year 2009 to 50 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for the charges of Robbery and Rape.

In a related development, the Asokwa Police on January 12, 2013, at 10.00 pm arrested 27 year-old Kofi Owusu, alias Kofi Isaac, unemployed and John Obeng Asare, 35, for snatching a Toyota Corolla with registration number AW 5964 -12 at a gun point.
