Gambia: D500,000 Bail for Infanticide Mother

The Brikama Magistrates' Court presided over by Principal Magistrate Hilary Abeke recently granted bail to one Banna Nyassi in the sum of D500, 000 with two Gambian sureties. The accused is charged with the offence of infanticide, contrary to Section 197 of the Criminal Code, Laws of The Gambia.

According to the particulars of offence, on or about the 24th December 2012 at Sitta village in the West Coast Region, the accused willfully caused the death of her child under the age of twelve months by sitting on her, thereby committed an offence.

When the charge was read to the accused, she pleaded not guilty and was granted bail accordingly. The case was adjourned for hearing. Sub-inspector A. Colley stood for the IGP.
