A Rwandan suspected of genocide and crimes against humanity has been arrested in France. Interpol was searching for 40-year-old Innocent Musabyimana after Rwanda issued a warrant for him in November but French officials and campaigners say they do not know anything about him.
Musabyimana was arrested in the Burgundy city of Dijon on Tuesday.
French authorities say they had no idea who he was, how long he had been in France or how he got here. They only know that he was training to drive a delivery van.
A group that tries to find genocide suspects in France was also surprised to hear of the arrest.
"Really, we have no information about him and for the moment we can't find anything about him," the group's chairman, Alain Gauthier, said.
But he is known to Rwandan justice officials.
There he is accused of being involved in genocide, murders and rapes during the 1994 inter-ethnic violence.
Prosecutors in Kigali have asked for his extradition.
A judge in Dijon will rule on the request by 30 January.
If it is granted Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will sign an extradition order to send him to Rwanda to face trial.
