The Democratic Alliance yesterday presented its Lifetime Contribution to Democracy in South Africa Award to Dr Richard van der Ross at his home in Constantia. Rarely made, this award was announced at the DA's November 2012 Federal Congress, in recognition of Dr van der Ross's cumulative contribution over a rich lifetime to building democracy in our country.
Dr van der Ross is a distinguished educationist, author and builder of institutions. He served with distinction as a public representative for our predecessor party, the Democratic Party (DP). He served a productive term as South Africa's High Commissioner to Spain. He has always made his voice heard on matters of public importance.
A fine South African, the DA salutes Dr van der Ross for his consistent devotion to educational excellence, a necessary condition for a thriving democracy. It is our honour and privilege to be able to grant an award to someone of his calibre.
Wilmot James, Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance
