Some journalists and military personnel from Nigeria are currently in Stuttgart, Germany, for a one-week familiarisation tour of the U.S. African Command (AFRICOM).

The tour, running from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, is aimed at acquainting the participants with better understanding of the command.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tour will also afford the delegates the opportunity to learn about the history of the command.

It will also afford the participants the opportunity to learn about the mission and engagement programmes of the command in West Africa.

AFRICOM is one of the six U.S. Defence Department's geographic combatant commands responsible to the Secretary of Defence for military relations with African nations, the African Union and Africa's regional security organisations.

With its headquarters at Kelly Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany, AFRICOM began operations on Oct. 1, 2007 and officially became an independent command on Oct, 1. 2008.
