Tunisia: Prime Ministry Condemns 'Any Criminal Act Undermining Cultural and Historical Heritage'

Tunis — The Prime Ministry expressed Friday "deep indignation of any criminal act undermining Tunisia's cultural and historical heritage," following "the continued odious assaults committed recently in a very short period of time against the mausoleums and zaouias in several governorates and cities of Tunisia."

These acts "aroused the indignation of all the Tunisians" and provoked "hostile reactions in front of these acts of destruction," said the Prime Ministry in statement published on Friday.

By condemning these aggressions, the Prime Ministry specified that it "ensures compliance with the security arrangements and the judicial procedures underway to investigate the offenders who committed or ordered to commit these acts."

According to the same source, the "mausoleums and zaouias in Tunisia are integral part of the national memory in its cultural and civilisational dimensions and should not be in any way profaned or torched under religious pretext, because the statement explains "these places have not represented at any moment in history a problem for Tunisians known by their moderation and golden mean in thinking, faith and behaviour".

In this same communiqué, the Prime Ministry called on all the Tunisians, the civil society and the cultural associations concerned by heritage "to face up any attempts which undermine the history of their country and its symbolic monuments away from any form of violence and discord."
