Egypt: 3rd Army Commander - Army Committed to Utmost Self-Restraint

Commander of the Third Army Maj. Gen. Osama Askar denied on Saturday 26/1/2013 reports on the army's use of live ammunition against protesters and killing of a large number of civilians.

He pointed out that the army is committed to utmost self-restraint, expressing his sincere condolences to the victims' families.

The Armed Forces' mission in Port Said was to control the situation and secure strategic and vital facilities particularly those that affect the lives of the people, he said.

Suez City Hall, Suez Security Directorate and Courts Complex are under the Army's control for protection, he said.
