Ghana: Otumfuo Is Above Gutter Politics - Ashanti Royal

Kumasi — One of the architects of Ghana's current democratic dispensation, Mr. Alex Asabr, has said Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene is above politics and warned that no individual or group of persons should dare drag him into, what he called, "gutter politics".

Mr. Asabre, a son of the Golden Stool and chairman of the erstwhile UK-based Ghana Democratic Movement (GDM) has threatened to take legal action against any person who acts to drag the name of the Ashanti King into politics.

"As a true son of the Golden Stool, I will not hesitate to obtain a writ in a court of law against any person who would try to dabble the name of the King into politics", he stressed.

"The Asantehene is above politics" he told The Chronicle in an interview in Kumasi in reaction to speculations in some quarters and in the media that the Ashanti King is partisan and belongs to a political party.

Mr. Asabre condemned the speculators, who he described as disgruntled elements and immature in politics to drag Otumfuo into their dirty politics, saying by virtue of his position, he plays an advisory role to the government of the day, especially on issues concerning the Asanteman.

He reminded NDC radio communicators that Otumfuo is rated the fourth King in the world and that his status equals that of Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, for which reason nobody should drag his name into politics.

Mr. Asabre also explained that the Asantehene is the Life Patron of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club and has no alliance with any other club in the country.
