A member of the House of Lords in the UK has praised Uganda for playing a key role in leading the world in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Lord Norman Fowler, who was flanked by Heather Alcock, the Policy Advisor of All Party Parliamentary Group on HIV/AIDS was visiting community support centres for orphaned and vulnerable children in Katikamu, Luwero district on Saturday.

"Uganda has set a pace for the rest of East Africa and the whole world to follow. The call for abstinence, faithfulness and condom use has seen the number of HIV cases reduce in the past years," he said.

Fowler, who is an advocate for the National Aids Trust and the vice-chairperson of All Party Parliamentary Group on HIV/AIDS as well as the Patron of Trustee of Terrence Higgins Trust, observed that Ugandans are determined to fight against the pandemic. He expressed desire to remove all possible obstacles to the fight against the disease.

"Let us fight against discrimination and stigma of HIV victims who include the infected and affected people such as orphans and widows. Let us also prevent further spread of the disease," he said.
