Nigeria: Aspirant Wants PDP Chairmanship Primaries Cancelled

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship aspirant in the December 29 primaries at Gwagwalada council, Alhaji Saidu Garba Zuba, last Wednesday called for the cancellation of the primaries in the area due to its noncompliance with the Electoral Act.

Garba in a petition addressed to the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner and made available to newsmen in Gwagwalada, alleged that no election was conducted in Gwagwalada on December 31, after the primaries was annulled on December 29 primaries.

He said the primaries were annulled in the area following observations by INEC that it did not fall in line with the provision of Section 87 of the Electoral Act.

The aspirant stated that the election was annulled by the party with the aim of conducting fresh primaries on December 31 in order to conform to the ACT but no fresh election took place.

He alleged that the names of all aspirants that won the cancelled election of December 29 were submitted to INEC office as winners of the purported December 31 election.

According to him, the name of one Mustapha Adamu, which was forwarded to INEC, is not a true reflection of the people's choice since an election was never conducted in Gwagwalada council.

"I wish to inform you that no primary election can be conducted in Gwagwalada Area Council without the knowledge of INEC, police, SSS, party delegates and the aspirants," he added.

He therefore urged INEC to use its statutory powers under the Electoral Act to re-order fresh election in the area, adding that it should be well monitored and supervised by their office awith other relevant agencies.
