Nigeria: Shamsudeen Wants More Funding for Statistical Research

National Planning minister, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman has urged Federal Ministries Departments and Agencies to provide the Department of Planning Research and Statistics (DPRS) and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) in their agencies with enough resources to enable them perform their duties effectively.

A statement issued by the head of information of the commission, Haiba Salisu quoted the minister as saying this in a keynote address at the opening of a sensitisation workshop on Guidelines for Performance Contract Design, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting organised for the MDAs organized by the National Planning Commission (NPC).

While noting the challenge of data collection and processing in performance measurement, Shamsudeen encouraged the MDAs to work closely with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which as the custodian of the nation's data, would ensure that the relevant and credible data are made available towards realising their deliverables.

The idea of the workshop was to build the capacity of the participants, who are going to play a key role in this concept of performance contract developed by the National Planning Commission.

Dr. Usman further stated that to be able to implement the NV20:2020, "we must adopt a radical way of thinking to be able to assess the performance of preceding years while charting a way forward for the coming years."
